Igor Romanov, Interview of a Magician in Porn Industry

In my chase for porn producers, I went into Igor Romanov, a very talented photographer: a single photograph makes you instantly feel … naughty, it definitely conveys an emotion. If you do not believe me, you should definitely have a look at Igor’s stream on flickr. So? Are you convinced now? Yes, this is what I thought * giggles *. To stand out the crowd of photographers in the same business, it takes some talent. I truly believe Igor has a lot more than the average photographer .

Igor is not only a skilled artist, he is also very charming and kindly accepted to give an interview. I let him to choose the place as I wanted the interview to occur in his environment, in a place where he would feel comfortable. He made me wait for a few minutes before sending me a taxi to the place. He told me he was naked and needed to dress, and when I asked if he was a nudist or something, he replied and I quote: “No, but I have been known to do my best work this way.” It was starting good, I felt the man was definitely smart and amusing.

The interview

When I finally arrived I looked around: he chose a comfy interior in a public place. I wondered if it was a translation of his inner side, a comfy and public man … The interview would probably give me an answer to my question. He invited me to sit and we genuinely starting to talk, despite the presence of a visitor behind us … it did not seem to bother him, so I conducted the interview as if we were in a completely private environment.

Catherine Palen: “Hi Igor, nice to meet you in person.”

He smiled and stared at me.
Igor Romanov: “So what would you like to know?”
CP: “Well, first thing, thank you for your time, I really appreciate!”
IR: “Oh, you’re welcome. Glad I could help.”

I had a circular look of the place and gestured.
CP: “So now why this place, what made you to choose this one among all other places of SecondLife?”
IR: “Well, originally I had pondered making you get undressed to have the interview on the beach below, but this is more secluded and you can keep your clothes if you like. But honestly, it was more of a split second decision than anything.”

I laughed and finally nodded.
CP: “So you’re an impulsive person, is it how you would describe yourself ?”
IR: I am comfortable enough in my decision making to be impulsive when I need to, but I do like to plan things out as well, especially if I’m shooting photos.
CP: “Ok let’s talk about our work…. How would you define it? What do you do exactly?”
IR: “Well, I like taking pictures of twisted bodies. I find landscape pictures quite boring unless there’s a life form visible somewhere in the shot, even if at a distance. But to me it isn’t just about showing sex. It’s about revealing an conveying an emotion.”

I nodded in appreciation. This is something I cannot deny of his work, there is something about his photographs, they speak for themselves.
CP: “I see. Do you own a company to promote your work? When did you start and how?”
IR: “Oh no. I don’t put of the facade here that it’s “So and So naughty productions” or something. Those entities are rarely real anyhow. I make no bones for the fact that the “organisation” is just me. I have been in SL for about a year and a half. I started taking picture originally just for my profile, so that people who didn’t actually see me in world might know something about me. It just grew from there and I got addicted to the photography thing.
CP: “Very interesting! So how do you select your models? Do you go through agencies, or do you do the selection yourself?”
IR: “No agencies. I tend to work with models I’ve seen on Flickr or met in world. Ultimately I tend to call those I just like to work around and like personally. Several of them have become my closest friends in SL.”

I took a mental note on his last remark. Flickr is indeed a formidable content provider in the business… definitely something to investigate further for SLA Media (the name of our starting company).
CP: “Ok, it’s like a personal network of models…. interesting!”
IR: “Absolutely. There are some that’s I have introduced to modelling and photography myself. They don’t always continue in erotic photography, but there’s one in particular that I shot a year ago that is quite hooked on it now.”
CP: “With the quality of your work I can understand. How many shootings did you do so far?”
IR: “Oh gosh. I have around 500 pictures posted on Flickr alone, much less those in Second Life or for magazines that haven’t made it to Flickr yet. Plus you probably see published less that 8% of what is actually shot.”
CP “What tools do you use for your work?”
IR: “Tools in world, like props and such?”
CP: “Yes and post processing tools as well if you use some.”
IR: “I have posed using still poses, animations on furniture and pose makers like Anypose and Animare. I use Lumalite for personal lighting on bodies as well as for storing and sending poses to the model. But I also use prims for lighting quite often these days. For post processing I use Adobe Photoshop and Pixlr Autodesk.
CP: “Ok. quite a lot of tools. It seems a complex work!”
IR: “Really? In my mind it seems pretty straightforward.”

He chuckled at his last comment and I laughed in return.
CP: “Probably because you’re skilled in your area.”
IR: “Photoshop is used more for fixing problems like necklines and twisted limbs. Pixlr I use for color adjustment and such.”
CP: “Could you please pick a few pics in your collection you’re the most proud of and tell us why?”
IR: “Well, they’re all my babies and I love them all at the time. My goal is photo realism, not computer art, so many people may find my shots somewhat boring looking since they don’t have all the swirly looking effects. I can pull out a few.
CP: “Yes please!”

IR: “This one I’m proud of for a few reasons. Emma “Jennnnna” a legend in SL porn is the subject of the shoot. I’m proud of it because it required so many subjects in total, in order to pull it off. Plus I was going for a movie look and feel and think I did quite well at pulling it off, color wise.”

IR: “This next one is one I am thrilled with because of the lighting and pose in achieving realism in an envirnment that was entirely in world.”

IR: “The third one I am proud of in the way I was able to blend elements of SL and real life together. I used no green screen. It was all shot in world though.”
CP: “Very impressive work indeed”
IR: “Thank you so much. I enjoy blurring the line between real and SL, even if the subject matter is meant to be a fantasy.”

I smiled and nodded.
CP: “So what are your projects Igor? Any new ideas or concepts you’re working on?”
IR: “Well, I have appeared in a couple of movies so far, but I am actually working on one of my own at the moment. I hope to be doing regular works for Slut magazine as I have already done, plus others as time permits.”
CP: “Very exciting. Can you tell us more about this project?”
IR: “The movie? It’s a short steamy music video starring Partee Mytili and myself.”
CP: “Do you plan to do more movies?”
IR: “Oh, I think it depends right now on time and how well this one does. I wanted to do a movie before, but I waited until I was more familiar with achieving the same look and feel as my photos.”
CP: “To finish that interview, would you tell us something about you that maybe people would be surprised to learn.”
IR: “Well, some people who don’t know me might be surprised to find that I’m a bit more private about my personal life, even in SL, than one might think from looking at my photos.”
CP: “Thank you Igor for having spent that time with me.”
IR: “It was my pleasure.”

I smiled brightly and raised, he raised as well, our interview was over.
CP: “Well I think that’s in the box. Hopefully it was not too long?”
IR: “I can be long winded.”

This is when he took me a bit by surprise.
IR: “So looking at the work you did on both your blog and for Slut, it appears that you’re no stranger to naughty shoots.”

I felt delighted by the compliment but could not reasonably think of myself as a professional photographer.
CP: “Well I am really an amateur. I do shoot always in world to support my text rather than really producing a good picture
IR: “How about we shoot something tomorrow to go with the interview. Get you naked and show you the business. You can say in your piece that I elected to show you rather than tell you about it.”

I stared at him to gauge if he was serious or not, no doubt possible he was. You can imagine how I felt at that instant … so excited at the perspective of being one of his models. Of course I said yes, I was too curious to approach the magician as he works. We discussed about our respective agenda and found the right time and day to meet again for a real shoot.

The shooting

The day of the shooting finally arrived and the taxi arrived to bring me to the place. Well it was actually quite early for me and I was not completely awaken when I arrived.

I blinked when I see a naked Igor welcoming me.
-“Welcome!” he said with his usual warm smile. “Good to see you again. I’m already dressed for work.” he added with half a smile. I could not prevent myself to laugh out loudly.
-“As I can see!” I replied trying to act relaxed when I was clearly not.
-“Ok. Let’s get rolling so we can get you in and out, no pun intended.” he joked.

Looking the amazing sim we were in I said:
-“Interesting place!”
-“This is the clock tower on a wonderful photography sim, an adult one at that.”

For the readers we were at Coconut Islands.

He continued:
-“First thing is that I’ll need you to undress, click ao off and grab one of the grey balls overhead, the one over the couch.”
-“Ok… let’s do this.” I said hesitantly.
-“Nervous?” he asked.
-“Is it that obvious? Yes a bit … I guess it is expected.” I replied
-“I don’t always think about it, but realizing you haven’t done one of these…”
-“A first step in the business” I commented while undressing

He nodded and smiled before adding:
-“Everyone starts out with animations and love capturing with them, but I also like making a pose that exhibits raw feeling. Not always easy.”
-“I definitely feel the spirit” I said with a wink now fully naked.
-“You’ll feel more than that. But alas, I hate to fuck you when you’re so sleepy and you not enjoy it.”

I smiled.
-“Ho! You’re a gentleman…Moreover I am getting more and more awake” I said jokingly.

He raised an eyebrow and finally laughed. We were having good time and it helped me relax … which was probably his goal. Shortly after I was on the sofa, my feet in the air, and my thighs wide spread and we were discussing a lot of details. This is definitely not a position a well educated lady should take when discussing with a gentleman but I was with a porn photographer doing a shoot, so I guess, it was ok for this.

I understood discussing and adjusting stuff with the help of Igor that his photograph takes a lot of effort to produce. First he is very well equipped, using balls to perfectly position the protagonists, lights and probably particular windlights settings too. But on top of that, he is a perfectionist, we took our time to choose the good hair and hair color, the right expression on my face. Then he worked quite a long time at positioning us both … until we were perfectly positioned, one in the other.

Then the shooting occurred, we were both immobile like a Rodin sculpture but definitely more erotic. Behind the scene, Igor was taking shots, changing angles and lights. I know it because he mentioned it from time to time. I was really curious to look at his work but I knew I would have to be patient as he performs some post-processing on his shots.

Finally he said:
-“Awesome babe. we are done. Thank you.”
-“Thank you Igor. I am eager to see how it will look! Can I stand?”

He nodded.
-“I will try and have it to you in 24 hours.”
-“Fantastic!” I said

And the day after I received this in my mailbox:

Amazing no? Compared to what I have been able to produce in the same environment. We are not belonging to the same category definitely.

Big thanks to Igor and my congratulations for the amazing work he is doing. I hope we will work again together. This movie project he as is definitely very promising!

Big kisses

    Hello Partner,

First of all congratulations for this excellent post. Nice to see, that we get stories about really good artists on our blog and his photos are really amazingly sexy and beautiful.

I am curious about one thing. How does it actually feel to you, laying there and posing for erotic pictures? What I mean by that, you are not actually having sex. You do not emote, there are no animations involved, all you do is lay there with your legs wide spread (not an unusual position for you, I know) but watching his cock going into your avatar.

Is it arousing? Do you feel kinda „penetrated“ or is it just putting pixels together, as you would in a Sandbox building something else like a house or a sign post? Is the connecting between an avatar and the person behind the avatar strong enough to actually feel this?

Oh, if anybody else had that experience and wants to share it with us, please feel free to post.

      Hi Carol,
that’s a very good question indeed. To be perfectly honest, the positioning part was kind of erotic indeed. I am not really sure it is because of the visuals (Igor is pretty cute you will admit it), or because we had what I felt was a connection. The whole time he was joking and kidding, and still doing his job in the background. Once positioned, we were having more technical discussions about things to amend in my look so it needed more of my concentration and I nearly forgot (nearly only), that we were doing all that with his cock stuffed in my pussy. That’s a bit crazy I know.

So if I want to be a bit analytical I think it can be erotic, even if it is a very technical and slow process (compared to pixel-porn at least). But it relies on the photographer and the subject to create that connection between them. I definitely think it’s better to roleplay a little, and maybe it has an effect on the general photograph at the end … maybe the connection, or the lust shows a little.

I would be happy to read someone else opinion on the subject.

        Cathy,

Correct me if I am wrong. What you mean is erotic in the same way as looking at an erotic scene or a picture. Not intimate in the sense of getting fucked. Whereby it is an interesting question in general whether or not you “feel fucked”, when somebody enters your avatar with his pixels. Is it in general just an erotic image or is it indeed a “mental penetration”.

I guess this depends how much one actually immerses into his virtual persona. In another words: How much do you see your avatar as a virtual representation or yourself, a virtual persona or a pixel-doll which does not have any kind of connection to your real life self.

I believe there is strong distinction to make between:

        1. Virtual persona
        2. Virtual representation of yourself
        3. An avatar

It would be interesting to read from others, how “real” is their virtual persona to themselves. I believe that the more you actually developed a virtual personality (or alternatively a virtual representation of yourself), the more you would feel “fucked” in such a situation.

In my case I can tell as much as this:

Caroline is not a pixel doll. Caroline is not a represantation of my real life self either. She is the “other me” in a virtual world. Sounds a bit like split personality disorder and maybe it is in a way.

To me this would not have been “making a erotic picture”, it would have been “shooting a photo of me getting penetrated”. The result is the same but because of the immersion being different the feeling would have been different too. If that would have been a good or a bad feeling bears relevance in this context.

This does not apply to my ALTS. They are not virtual personas, they are either pixel dolls, under cover disguises or role play characters to me. I have however ONE avatar which comes close to a virtual representation of my real life self, but I hardly ever use it.

Did I express myself good enough for this to make sense?

        Please discuss!

This is becoming very technical … or maybe psychological. How to answer this. I definitely do not feel my avatar as a pixel doll, and when playing a scene, whatever the scene is, I definitely feel this is me in this virtual scene. I would like to avoid using high references to compare my situation, but it is a bit like in the Avatar movie … there is this kind of link, even if the technology I am using is far from what the movie fiction is presenting. Still this is how I feel, my avatar is a digitilized extension of me.

Is it a mental disorder, more than probably, and it makes me very exposed to be harmed in the second world. I know that and I try to take care. So I am not sure in which category I am in … 2 probably. Not sure I undertand the two others still. Anyway, I project myself often strongly in my scenes and I feel and emote most of the time what I really feel … so yes I can feel the reality of an intercourse.

I am not sure I am very clear here… LOL! Well anyway happy to discuss it further.

            Ok, got it!

So you were not only posing you had “mental intercourse” with Igor. Would be interesting how he sees that!

            Hello Igor Romanov

You are more than welcome to participate in the discussion. In fact, I am very curious about your views about it.
Do you feel arousal when making those pictures, or is just a job?

Well I will definitely address this, but I will do so in the main thread. Thanks.

“Do you feel fucked, when having sex in Second Life?”

This, I think, is where you could categorize my various shoots and projects.

1.) “Having sex” with someone, and ‘catching’ spontaneous shots ‘during’ the encounter.

This is actually one of my more common ways to shoot… I don’t concern myself so much with windlights, or Depth of View settings, or general lighting, etc. I just shoot what I see… usually after I’ve posted an emote, and am awaiting my partner’s return reply.

Sometimes I only get one or two shots I can use. Sometimes I get more. Sometimes they’re great. Sometimes they stink.

I ‘do’ get into these sessions, ‘erotically/sexually/mentally’ speaking.

    2.) Artistic shooting…

Whole different animal. The onus is not on ‘sexual encounter’ between me and the model(s) with me. Whether I’m shooting or they’re shooting or we’re both shooting… it’s all about “THE SHOTS”. Whether we’re producing a series of photos to tell a story of an encounter… or we’re doing some glamour erotic photography… or we’re just taking a portrait or ‘friendly snapshot’ of an informal ‘hanging out together’ kind of thing, like you might do in real life with family or friends… there’s no ‘sexual/emotional investment’ for the most part… or if there is one, it’s not ‘intense’ the way ‘having sex’ with someone on SL is.

This applies to still photography and movies as well.

Taking those categories as extremes… there are ‘shades in between them’ of course. That said… when I’m ‘having sex’ in SL… it can be emotionally and erotically stimulating… and back when I still did the ‘relationship thing’ on SL, it was even MORE emotionally intimate and stimulating, to the point that I had something with my partner… that I couldn’t have with anyone else, no matter what our ‘pixels’ did together in world.

    Even today…
If I do, say, an escort job? That client is ‘having sex’ with me and I approach it as such… it’s about sexual gratification and fun… No ‘romance’ or ‘love’ involved…

If I ‘have sex’ with someone casually, it’s much like the escort job, EXCEPT that I’m not getting paid for it.

If I have sex with someone secondary to an emotional relationship? That’s in an ENTIRELY different category of intimacy, and a special situation unto itself, because ‘the heart’ really IS involved. (I say this in all candor… IF I was in a relationship with someone… and fucked 100 people other than them… that person I’m in the relationship with is getting a part of me, that NOBODY ELSE can touch, no matter HOW hard they try.)

THEN… there’s ‘doing porn’… which can be ‘titillating’… but generally is more about the finished product, and the technical side of making it… than ‘having sex’.

Those lines can blur, obviously… but I think that kind of ‘expresses the wide and varied landscape’ on sex in Second Life as I see it.

Damien is me, but at the same time, he is not me. We’re like two faces in a Rubik’s cube, similar yet different. We inhabit the same body and at times can get mixed up with each other but that is usually very short lived.

Of course, that’s just in normal situations. In SL sex, things tend to be a bit different. I know this answer’s a bit weird for some, but whether or not I actually feel the sex hinges on the emotes. I’ve said before that words have a stronger effect on me than the animations do. This is because the animations play in a never ending loop and eventually lose their magic while the words in emotes bring images to my mind, and it’s these images that really bring the fucking sensation. This is especially true when the emotes are detailed, the animations playing in front of me take a backseat to the images in my mind. The opposite can be true as well if there is no emoting and all that’s shared are Ooos and Aaaas. It would just be pixel porn.

So to finally answer it properly, I can feel like I’m actually fucking when I’m having sex in second life, but it’s not all the time that it happens.

I can’t say there is a wrong way to shoot anything in SL. In real life erotic photography, you will see shots that are posed for the camera, much like in fashion photography. (They have to hold still somewhat.) Then there are other photos that seem to be screen shots of movies, or still taken while filming a movie. They are just different methods of shooting. I encourage photographers to explore every method possible. I have shot stories where it was all a series of animations. One aired in the July issue of Aroused that had 13 shots. I originally shot 176 pictures over the course of two nights to get it all done.

As far as the question of arousal goes, yes, I do get aroused by the shoot many times. Every shoot is different though and I can’t say I know the formula as to why some are more of a turn on than others. Chemistry with whom your working? Ease of work from the technical side? The pose used? It’s hard to say. I don’t think I could or would want to do this if I didn’t find it stimulating. Let’s just say some are arousing enough that, if there is no place for “release” while working, I will surely find some release when I’m finished. 😀

I had an sl photographer tell me sometime ago that she didn’t enjoy sex in SL at all. Now, I don’t know if that was a remark because she was concerned I might hit on her at some point, but honestly, when I look at the work of someone like that, I must say that it shows, so I’m not surprised. While the poses might be of naughty things, I see no emulation of arousal of emotion involved. Just obligatory sex stuff (which I find boring).

Mitzy Broadway (MitzzyB): The idea is to be able to smell and taste the scene, when you do that the arousal effect it at 100 percent but I will say if your shooting a scene for hours on end its like taking a finger and sticking it your ear or mouth no arousal effect because you have been in that same position for hours.

I believe there is a very real difference between capturing candid shots during a romantic encounter and setting up a photo shoot for the expressed purpose of capturing artistic, erotic scenes. I haven’t had much experience with the latter, but a recent photo shoot with Caroline brought home the dichotomy for me. She was in charge, posing me, telling what to wear (and what NOT to wear), and it felt very much like a job. An enjoyable job, to be sure, but a job nonetheless. But then she joined me for a couple of erotic shots, and as she was setting up the poses it started to feel much more enjoyable and erotic. Sure we’re just pixels with personality in SL, but I could imagine the feel and heat of her skin on me, her legs entwined with mine, my cock inside her…and I started to become aroused. It’s a very interesting experience, and I hope that my employment with SLA Productions brings me many more interesting experiences.
