Damien Thorne, rising star in the porn photography

I discovered Damien through the SLA blogs, he actually contacted me saying he liked the stories on catherinepalen.com. I was flattered of course but I also discovered Damien was a photograph. I asked him if he would be interested in getting an interview for SLA Media and guess what? He said yes. We met at his friend’s house where he takes a lot of his pictures. This is, by the way, also a sim where Igor Romanov (see Igor’s interview) works. I know that because he was around during the interview and stopped by to say hello.

The interview

“All right, so Damien, I would like to know how you discovered SecondLife? When was it? Why did you create an avatar and what were you expecting to find?”

Well, I discovered second life through an ad I saw on a forum. I can’t exactly remember which one it was though. That was around two years ago on July 21. I took some time to read about it before actually making an account. When I read about how it was pretty much a worldwide thing, I knew I wanted to give it a try since I’ve always wanted to be able to connect with people from all around the world.

“Nowadays, what do you do In SecondLife, your hobbies, you favorite places?”

My activities in second life span a variety of things, with photography taking the top spot. I attend parties here and there, travel from sim to sim, and communicate with people here. As for hobbies, I guess photography can be listed as well. But when I just want to relax, I go fishing with my shubbie.

“Shubbie is a friend of yours?”

It’s sort of a pet thing. Helps with the fishing. This blue guy on my shoulder’s my shubbie, Shoobie.

“Hooo nice … How did you come to SL photography?”

I guess you can say I’ve always done it. I can remember taking photos from day one, when my avatar was still fresh. Of course, those photos are long gone thanks to a hard drive crash. As for the photography I do now, I guess it’s been a year since I started. Back then I didn’t have a Flickr yet nor was I aware that there was a group centered to it so I kept everything on my computer.

“Do you publish your work on other medias than Flickr?”

Not exactly, though I use Imgur to provide the people I worked with for the shot an earlier look at the photo.

“How would you define your art to someone who has never seen your stream?”

An exploration to the creative side of my mind.

“Would you say your stream is about porn?”

I would say that it contains pornographic themes, but it isn’t completely about porn.

“Did you do videos yet, or have been part of one?”

No I haven’t, although I have plans to try making one in the future.

“Excellent!! So the most difficult exercise now. Pickup 4-5 pictures in your stream. The ones you’re the most proud of and tell me why?”

This image is a rather basic shot, though I am quite proud of it as it marked the start of Lesley‘s rise in popularity.

Another shot featuring Lesley. This was my first time using anypose and to have been able to get it to look like this on my first attempt, it was quite an achievement for me. Nothing big, but it was a step in the right direction.

This next one is one I posted rather recently. Athena is quite well known in the group due to the amazing quality of her photos. To have her agree to do a shoot with a rather unknown name as mine and to have the image turn out well, it made me really happy.

I guess since the images came in an order of old to new, it would only be appropriate to end with my most recent photo which I consider my magnum opus. I used all my knowledge in using windlights, anypose, lighting, and photoshop to create this one, and I’m quite proud of the result.

“So apart from Anypose, do you use other props or tools in-world?”

Tools? Not really. As for props, I have a lot of pieces of furniture to be used either as a stage prop or as something to make my house look less empty. Of course, that’s only applicable when I do have a house of my own.

“And do you post-process? What do you use?”

I’ve only started doing it recently. The photo with Athena was the first image I experimented with in photoshop.

“How do you select your models?”

I’m not very picky in selecting my models. I usually ask the group if there was anyone that was available to pose for a photo. After that, I entertain people depending on who messaged first.

“What are your projects? Plans to try new things?”

My current project is the Summer Beauties series, though that will come to an end sometime this week as my summer draws to a close. As for new things, I’m always looking to experiment in my photos. A new model, a new setting, a new theme, there are so many things to tinker with.

One last question … tell us something surprising about you or a secret you never told anyone?

I don’t really know anything about me that would be surprising.

“OK, no worries … so it seems we are done Damien. Thank you for answering all those questions”

You’re welcome.

The shooting

After this warm interview, Damien proposed me to shoot and I was more than happy to pose. It was an opportunity as well to see him at work. He is patient and dedicated, and a perfectionist as well but this is common among photographers. Anypose is a delicate tool and it needs a lot of attention to catch the right pose. And here is the shot, a new one in the dark collection of Damien:

I hope that, like me, you have been seduced by Damien’s work. You can of course check his stream there are a lot of great shots to discover. Here is the taxi.

Kiss,
Cathy
